Swinging Sixties British Cinema Pack

notes compiled by Roy Stafford 2004

This is a pack of materials dealing with British Cinema in the 1960s. It is made up of notes and resources produced over the last few years to support film screenings of Alfie, Poor Cow, Darling and A Hard Day’s Night, as well as INSET events focusing on the mid 1960s. The pack will be particularly useful for students and teachers working on the WJEC Film Studies topic covering British Cinema 1963-73,

Contents

1. Overview essay, written to introduce a short season of Swinging Sixties films at Cornerhouse Cinema.

2. Notes on A Hard Day’s Night, linking it to questions about the ‘British Pop Musical’ and indicating the ways in which it was ‘new’. The notes also address the ‘messages and values’ questions prompted by the WJEC spec.

3. An article from itp 36 on working with students on Darling, discusses some of the issues about the 1960s social context for the film. This should be helpful for teachers thinking of using the film.

4. A study of Julie Christie as star, based on an analysis of Christie as the ‘Darling Girl’.

5. Notes on Poor Cow, an ‘anti-Swinging London film’.

6. Notes on Alfie, an influential film for audiences that raises questions about the representation of men in 1960s films.

7. A general essay on the British film industry in the 1960s.
